Ripple (XRP) is the native token for products developed by Ripple Labs - a US-based technology company. Launched in 2012, XRP Ripple (XRP) has positioned itself as a solution for borderless payments and an exchange gateway for individuals and organizations.
RippleNet - Ripple Labs’network of payment facilitators offer fast (up to 1500 TPS), cheap, and convenient cross-border transactions for individuals and organizations, aiming to replace SWIFT (the international payment method that most use) transfers.
Compared to other cryptocurrencies, Ripple (XRP) is more centralized. The maximum supply of XRP tokens is capped at 100 million, and Ripple Labs controls around 60% of them. Moreover, XRP can’t be mined, and it doesn’t follow either the PoW or the PoS consensus mechanisms. Instead, all transactions on RippleNet are validated by a small network of “trusted” nodes.
XRP hit its all-time high of $3.29 on January 4, 2018, with its total market cap breaching past $130 billion.
